2022 Annual Report

Investing in women’s active roles in peace and security to avoid conflict and renewed militarization is an essential prerequisite to achieving lasting peace and reaping the rewards for all humanity of Agenda 2030.

Against this global backdrop, the work of the Elsie Initiative Fund (EIF)—an innovative financing mechanism—is more relevant than ever. Its practical support is advancing uniformed women’s participation in peace and security and helping to bring about the transformative change required within security institutions.

The Elsie Initiative Fund (EIF) serves as a catalyst to accelerate the progress of Member States and United Nations organizations to increase the numbers of uniformed women in United Nations peace operations, by providing financial incentives and support.

Since its inception, the EIF has awarded US$17 million in 20 projects globally. Some of these projects are implementing tailored solutions to address identified national barriers to the deployment of uniformed women in peace operations, while others are seeking to identify and analyse these barriers.

In 2022, four of these projects were successfully completed, 11 are currently being implemented, and three are at the approved status. This 2022 Report highlights key results and impact achieved, innovative practices, lessons learned and the way forward.
